Brace yourself, because in a moment you’re going to read a decision I made today that you’ll almost never hear anyone admit to. I’ve decided that I’m going to start sleeping in.
For the past 6 months I’ve been trying hard to get a lot of my work done first thing in the mornings Hell I’ve even blogged about it. The feeling of waking up at 5:30am and getting all my most important tasks knocked out of the way was fantastic. However I’ve found it’s not a sustainable long term habit for me. It only takes a single night out, or a late movie to destroy my morning productivity for weeks. Waking up early really hasn’t been the problem, the problem has been operating at a high enough level that early in the morning to be truly efficient with my work.
Thanks to apps like Lift I’m able to really analyze what days I get the most done and I started finding that the more often I woke up early the less likely I was to complete everything else on my list. Obviously I’m not axing my morning ritual here, I’m just transitioning to a more average sleep schedule and no longer trying to get all my side project work done before I head into the office. The early riser thing was an interesting productivity experiment, but I think in the end I’m a much more accomplished night owl.
